The preparation of articles for the journal JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations is subordinated to international scientific standards, in accordance with the following conditions:
1. The journal JANUS.NET is published exclusively online, with free access, twice a year, in May and November. The journal does not charge any fees, including for the submission, publication or access to articles.
2. Articles submitted for publication must be original, and authors agree not to submit their work to another publication at the same time.
3. Although OBSERVARE – Foreign Relations Observatory – holds the copyright for the publication as a whole, each author owns the copyright for their individual text, but undertakes to authorise its dissemination through scientific journal indexing networks. If republishing later elsewhere, please refer to the publication in JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations. JANUS.NET publishes under the Creative Commons 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.
4. Articles submitted for consideration should be sent to the Editorial Board in electronic format to the email address janus.net@autonoma.pt, as an attached file, accompanied by a brief Curriculum Vitae of the author(s).
5. A separate file must be submitted containing the identification of the author(s), their affiliation, location and country, as well as their contact email address(es).
6. Texts must be submitted in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian or French.
6.1. Articles may be published only in the language in which they are submitted or in a bilingual version, in which case the author must provide versions in both languages (language of submission and English) or pay for the translation.
6.2. Articles submitted in Portuguese may be published in English, with the author providing the translated version.
6.3. Articles submitted in English may be published in Portuguese, Spanish, French or Italian, depending on the author’s native language and/or preference, with the author providing the version in the second language.
6.4. JANUS.NET is available to provide contacts and quotes for translators/proofreaders to authors who wish to publish their articles in a bilingual version.
7. The proposed articles are submitted to a scientific arbitration process by anonymous evaluation (blind referee) by specialists (peer review) in the respective area indicated by the Editorial Board. After submission, the text is certified as original using similarity or plagiarism detection software. This process is usually time-consuming, so it is advisable to submit originals well in advance.
8. Two different scientific reviewers are asked for their opinions, which may approve the article, suggest changes to the text or advise against its publication. In the event of a disagreement between the opinions, a third opinion may be requested. Once the scientific quality of the article has been assured, the decision on whether to publish it is made by the Editorial Board and communicated to the author(s), together with the reasons for the decision.
9. The basic language for submitting original files is “.doc”.
10. The recommended maximum length for each article is 6,000 words (indicative), including notes and bibliography. Articles exceeding 9,000 words will not be accepted.
11. Images (diagrams, maps, tables and graphs) must include a caption, be numbered consecutively and have a source reference; iconography and infographics are the responsibility of the author(s) and must comply with copyright and intellectual property requirements. All infographics must be sent in a separate file in an editable format.
12. Texts must be accompanied by five keywords and an abstract in the original language of the text. The abstract should have a maximum length of 2,000 characters, including spaces.
13. Quotations should be placed in quotation marks and bibliographical references should be included in the text, in accordance with APA standards “surname, date: page” (Tribe, 1990, p. 46).
14. Whenever justified, without prejudice to their inclusion in the document in ‘.doc’ format, the original files of tables and figures should be sent separately, in JPEG, GIF or XLS format.
15. Footnotes should be numbered consecutively, without parentheses, from the beginning to the end of the article.
16. Complete bibliographical references should not exceed thirty and should be presented in alphabetical order at the end of the article, following APA guidelines:

17. In addition to scientific articles, the journal JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations also usually includes a section of shorter texts, called ‘Notes and Reflections’, and a section of Critical Reviews.
18. Texts for “Notes and Reflections” should be approximately 3,000 words in length and reviews should be a maximum of 2,500 words, identifying the publication in full.
19. All articles are published in PDF and HTML format and are assigned a DOI.
