The writing of articles for JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations, complies with international scientific standards, in accordance with the following conditions:
1. JANUS.NET is an open access exclusively online journal published biannually in May and November.The journal does not levy any charges, these include no charges to process, publish or access the papers.
2. The articles proposed for publication must be original. Authors are obliged not to simultaneously submit their articles for publication elsewhere.
3. Although OBSERVARE – Observatório de Relações Exteriores-(Observatory for External Relations) retains authorship rights on the whole of the publication, each author has copyright regarding his/her own article; the author autorizes the broadcast through networks of scientific journals; if published elsewhere at a later stage, please refer to its prior publication in JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations. JANUS.NET subscribes to the Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).
4. The articles sent for publication must be sent in electronic format as attached files to janus.net@autonoma.pt, addressed to the editorial director, together with a brief resume of the author(s).
5. In a separate file, authors must send a form indicating their name, institution they are associated with, place and country of work, and contact details.
6. The texts may be submitted in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish or Italian and will always be published in two languages – the original language and English (or in English and Portuguese). Translations will be the responsibility of the editorial board.
7. The proposed articles are submitted to a scientific arbitration process by anonymous evaluation (blind referee) by specialists (peer-review) in the respective area indicated by the Editorial Board. After the submission of the article, the integrity of the text is certified using plagiarism detection programmes. This process will normally take a long time, which is why we suggest sending the originals well in advance.
8. Two scientific reviewers will be asked to give their opinion on articles. They will be responsible for approving articles, suggest changes or advise against publication. When those two opinions do not concur, a third opinion may be requested. However, the final decision on publication is the responsibility of the editorial director, who will inform authors and provide well-founded arguments for his decision.
9. The “.doc” format shall be used for the submittal of original texts.
10. Articles may not exceed 6,000 words (indicative), including the bibliography and notes.
11. Images (diagrams, maps, tables and graphs) must be accompanied by captions, indication of sources and numbered in sequential order; the use of iconography and infography is the sole responsibility of authors and they must comply with copyright and intellectual property requirements. All infographics should be sent in a separate file and in editable format.
12. Texts must be accompanied by five keywords and an abstract in the text’s original language. Abstracts must not exceed 2,000 characters, including spaces.
13. Quotations must be placed in inverted commas and bibliographical references incorporated in the text, according to the APA System: “surname, date: page” (Tribe, 1990: 46).
14. Whenever applicable, and without compromising its inclusion into the “.doc” text, the original files of tables and figures must be sent separately in JPEG, GIF or XLS format.
15. Footnotes must be numbered, without brackets, presented in a sequential manner, from start to finish.
16. Bibliographical references must not exceed 30, and must be sorted alphabetically at the end of the article, according to the APA System:

Book chapters
Surname, Name (date). Title of chapter followed by Name and Surname (ed), Title of book. Place of publication: Publisher, pages.
Journal and newspapers articles

17. Besides scientific papers, JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations will normally include a section of shorter texts, titled “Notes and Reflections”, and another for book reviews.
18. Texts to be included in the “Notes and Reflections” section should be around 3,000 words and book reviews should be a maximum of 2,500 words, fully identifying the publication.
19. All articles are published in PDF and HTML format.
